Smart Health Examines Advancements in Medicine, Healthy Aging, Innovative Treatments and Personal Triumphs
The United States spends more than any other country on medical costs per person, amounting to approximately 16% of the gross domestic product. And still, among 13 industrialized nations – including Japan, Sweden, France and Canada – the U.S. was ranked 12th, based on a measurement of 16 health indicators such as life expectancy, low-birth-weight averages and infant mortality.
But this sobering news is not the whole story. There are tremendous medical advances being achieved in this county, and interestingly enough, many of them are taking place right here in west central Florida. We are leading the way in areas such as epilepsy surgery, stem cell transplantation research related to spinal injury, stroke, Alzheimer’s and cancer research. What’s more, St. Petersburg College and USF are combining resources to make west central Florida a world leader in the development of artificial limbs.
WEDU is proud to launch a new monthly series dedicated to sharing these advances and introducing the inspiring and courageous people behind them. In a half hour program, the new WEDU series, Smart Health, will focus on advancements in medicine, healthy aging, innovative treatments and personal triumphs – real life stories that produce practical advice, insight and inspiration to viewers. Each program will introduce medical issues from the studio and discuss them in-depth, on location with doctors and patients. And, it doesn’t stop there; viewers will also be provided resources and ways to pursue additional information on each topic.
